Energy Shots Linked To Too Much Potassium?

Energy shots are packed full of ingredients, and one worry is there is too much.  For the first time evidence has been found that there is too much potassium.  Most energy shots have an "energy blend", that lists some of the ingredients but they don't tell you how much.

Someone came into the office,  and said after a recent blood test they found out that their potassium levels were dangerously high.  They are avid energy shot users having 1-2 a day.  You know my stance on moderation, but I was intrigued so I got more information.  The doctor told him if he was eating a lot of prunes or bananas which this person was not.  But he realized that the energy shots had potassium in them, but didn't know how much.

I'm not a doctor but I did know that energy shots make some people have to pee more often than usual which can mean a lot of things, but is most likely the kidney trying to flush out the over abundance of chemicals/enzymes/ingredients in the body?

Doing some more research I discovered that if you are peeing a lot and have a high level of potassium, the reason is the kidney is either not filtering out the potassium, or you are continually feeding it such a high level of potassium that it can't keep up with filtering it out.  That explains the peeing.

My interest picqued I went to the doctor and had a blood test done as well.

The results?  My potassium was 158 when it should not be over 152.  And I don't have an energy shot as much as my friend, only having one every other day.  Talking to my doctor he said this is possibly the case.  He suggested stopping the energy shots and then trying the test again in 1-2 months.  So that is what I am doing.

Is there a link between dangerously high potassium levels and energy shots?  Its possible but further research and evidence is needed to support it.  The makers of these drinks should consider taking out the potassium as it is not something needed in the drinks, and of which we can get the necessary potassium levels from other things such as fruit.

So, the symptoms of high potassium is peeing a lot after an energy shot, so if this is the case, get a blood test, and try limiting your energy shot intake.  Remember your health is more important than a few hours of induced energy.
