The energy shot comes in two flavors and styles: Grape And Berry.  Grape is also different because it is "Extra Strength" giving a bit more caffeine and vitamins.  We highly recommend going with the extra strength depending upon your tolerance.  The berry flavored regular strength energy drink is also a good alternative.  Both taste great, and are easy to swallow.

So what's inside?  The same as Xtra Energy Shots.  We are talking Niacin, Vitamins B6-12, taurine, malice acid, caffeine, tyrosine, amylase, protease, all that other delicious sounding stuff that gets are heart pumping and our skin burning.

Walmart To Enter The Energy Shot Market?

This leads us to another interesting thing as we were investigating energy shots.  Rumor has it that Walmart's very own Great Value brand will be releasing (or has released in certain areas) their very own store brand energy shot.  This is a super interesting development, and something we will watch as the news unfolds.  We believe that they will be outsourcing and have it on good authority that NVE is doing the packaging and manufacturing.  That being said when Walmart swoops in the Stacker 2's may disappear so you ought to get them quick.

Haust energy shots provide a different appeal than most every other energy shot on the market, but does this different than the rest attitude work?

We believe so.

First off, let's look at the packaging.  Instead of the baby bottle look of all the 5 hour copies, we have a straight cylindrical package about the height of an iPhone, and the same circumference of the other energy shots.  The packaging is mostly black with a metal grunge feel to it.  A whole bunch of extreme sport sillohuettes are plastered on the front, with text that would be just as familiar on a rock metal album as it does here.  In keeping with the packaging the tag line "Fuel your ride." makes us roll our eyes and giggle at the same time.

But we get the point.  This energy shot brings you the intense energy you need to ride your moto x cycle, skate your board, or do extreme stuff that is not in front of the computer.

So does it fuel you for an extended 6 hours as their website claims?  We're getting there...

Let's talk about taste, because with an added half ounce of juice to drink, flavor is important to us.  Again, unlike the other companies who name their flavor something like "totally bodacious berry" or "butt kicking berry" or "extreme toots" which always ends up being tart berry or cough syrup, Haust chose not to name the flavor of the drink.  Probably a smart move, but not for what you think.

Haust Energy IS the best tasting energy shot we have ever had.

Without a flavor name we will try to describe it.  It is sort of a mangoeey, apricoty, creamy flavor.  That being said, it doesn't sound great, but trust me, you will be pleasantly surprised when this hits your taste buds on the way down to your gullet.  Here are some name suggestions for Haus:

Anyway, so now let's get passed its deliciousness, when it comes down to it isn't as important as energy delivery.  I mean banana cream pie tastes pretty dang good, but it doesn't give me any energy, so how about Haust?

It delivers on energy performance for a solid 4 hours or so (at least for us).  So not quite the 6 hours they claim, but still good.  I give them a hard time about the .5 ounces but I think they had their reasoning for it.

Let's look at the ingredients, and I will explain.  Another thing that sets them apart is they clearly state their caffeine levels.  Everyone else says "About as much caffeine as a cup of coffee".  In other words they don't want you to know.  I've had some pretty weak cups of coffee, and decaf has none, so how much is in a cup of coffee.

Haust clearly states 100mg of caffeine, which is no surprise about as much as a medium cup of coffee.  The other thing they recommend is having either half the energy shot for solid energy, or the whole thing for extreme amounts of energy.  So depending on your tolerance you can better gauge if 50mg of caffeine is going to be enough or if your fuel tank really needs 100mg.  We recommend them adding a little more "punch" if they want to become top dog.

In conclusion I have decided that Haust is a good energy shot.  Unfortunately it is a little on the expensive side at $2.99 retail, which is almost as much as 5 Hour Energy.  However, if you hop over to their website you can get Haust Energy Shots for $2.25/each when you buy in bulk.  Still, a bit on the high side, but now you at least got to try them for the irresistable flavor.

Matador challenges you to slay the bull after drinking their 3 ounce energy shot.  All that legal risk is taken for you the consumer to go at it and chase down bulls with the courage of a cracked out meth addict.

All jokes aside we like a lot of things about Matador.  Despite the larger 3 ounce bottle, we love the looks of it, and enjoy that it is made from a metal rather than a plastic.  It's packaging is stunning, and we always appreciate seeing packaging that is different than the 2 ounce variety.

Matador comes in 2 flavors: strawberry champagne and mojito.  We found the strawberry to be lacking, but were pleased with the mojito flavor, and how much it actually tasted like mojito.  Strawberry gets docked only because t tastes like many others out there.  The only other negative we noticed was a slight tea leaf flavor, but not a big deal.  As far as ease of swallowing, this is one of the higher rated ones, but we don't think you will be buying these just because they taste good.

The kick on this puppy is similar to FRS.  It is probably because it has a natural caffeine source, less than the standard energy shot, and is packed full of Quercetin, which we have found to be a great source of energy without that cracked out feeling.

So, as you probably guessed Matador gives a less intense energy buzz, but seems to last nearly as long, carrying you on a flatter plateau of elevated enlightenment.

After drinking it I went to my grandpa's to see if he'd let me castrate one of his bulls.  After telling me he wouldn't, I least asked to wrestle one of the things.  Again, he refused, but said I was more than welcome to harass the goats.  So I ran around the goat pen, and locked horns with one of them.  After it head butted me in the balls, I decided I had enough and was sure glad that the encounter was only with a pygmy goat and not a bull.

In conclusion, we didn't feel pepped up enough to slay ferocious cows, but we did get enough even, natural energy to stay awake for the afternoon.  This one is a good choice for those into more natural sources of pep, and just want something to get you through the day without giving you a whacked out buzz.

Monster Hitman Energy Shot -This energy shot is good, but not great.  People complain about the taste most.  It's high price and mediocre buzz is why we took it off the list.

Now that we have covered the losers, let's look at the new ones that have made the list.

Worx Energy Extra Strength Shot - Worx is new on the scene 2011.  Copying 5 Hour's bland commercials and similar marketing tactics we were thinking another "me too" energy shot.  However, the Extra Strength version truly performs and gives a clean buzz that lasts longer than the rest, with no crash.

Now to the list.  It is going to look similar to 2011, but that's only because the year has been slow in "solid" product releases.  Is the energy shot trend finally peaking?  That's for another article altogether.

According to our tests the Ephrine plus contains no ephedrine product in it.  In fact, it contains nothing out of the ordinary.  Expect the usual B vitamins and caffeine for your local pick me up.

I found the packaging to be okay, but not to my liking.  The lid opened as normal, and the liquid was drinkable like other energy shots.  Berry flavor. The taste was neither bad nor good.  It provided the artificial energy as one would expect to get through the day.

Not only do I feel revitalized, now I know that I can get sustainable, real energy the way nature intended.  And I just found out that nature intended that I get it through green tea catechins.  The taste of V8 is unique indeed to the typical energy shot expert.  It is a different experience.  If you have v8 products before you will be use to it, but otherwise it may be a new experience for your taste buds.  It is decent, but others have made it obvious that it is a love it or hate it scenario.  Thank goodness they added an extra half ounce to help enhance the flavor so you have to drink 2.5 ounces versus the usual 2 ounces.  It's still a shot folks.
